| JSuite is a very powerful, professional-looking set of components that allows you to deploy sophisticated user interfaces over the Internet without requiring Swing/JFC on the client. The components cover most of the interesting ones that AWT is lacking, including a tab control, table, and tree view. One component it could really use is an image list, as a replacement for the AWT list.
The beans are nicely packaged in individual archive files, so if you are only using one or two JSuite components, you don't have to download the entire widget kit (unlike with Swing). The beans have excellent performance. One annoying things about the beans, if you are doing customization of them (e.g. subclassing, etc.), is that they use the Java security modifiers too liberally; it is difficult to extend the beans behavior when they don't use accessor methods, and the constructors are private. Also, if you are needing to use Java beans reflection at runtime, the beans become very slow, as their bean info classes are very inefficient. I haven't tried version 4.0 of JSuite yet, but in 3.0, the listener model was still underdeveloped. Basically, you must use an action listener for all bean events, instead of separating into multiple listener classes; for example, it would have been nice if the PVTable used the ItemListener interface, instead of muddling all events into the action listener.
Overall, the packaging technique and the size, speed, and appearance of the beans make this product highly recommended. The only caveats I have are limited extensibility and mediocre OO design (bit masks and switch statements are prevalent). |
